Chinatown to 2010 Olympics… “up Yours!”

NO Way in Hell.

That’s the word from Vancouver’s Chinatown community to VANOC, the Olympic Organizing committee in Vancouver, who had queried Vancouver’s Chinatown to see if they could cancel the city’s annual Chinese New Year parade.

The friggen nerve of these 2010 round eyes, eh?
fuck olympics

VANCOUVER: Vancouver’s Chinese community had a defiant message for Winter Olympics organisers when it was suggested they should cancel their longstanding Lunar New Year parade — “no way in hell”.

The city’s 36th annual parade, which will usher in the Year of the Tiger, will go ahead as planned on February 14, two days after the start of the February 12-28 Olympics.

City councillor Kerry Jang said there had initially been suggestions from VANOC, the Olympics organising committee, to either cancel or postpone the parade “over security and other concerns”.

“The Chinese community said no way in hell’,” said Jang, a third-generation Chinese-Canadian. “They went to city hall and said forget it, we’re having it’. So we had a compromise.”

He said he was expecting about 20,000 people or more to attend this year’s festivities which will start earlier than usual.

With numerous initiatives currently underway to revitalise Chinatown, the second largest of its kind in North America after San Francisco, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said the economic health of the area was a priority.

Current plans include lobbying to get the area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“Chinatown, like all of Vancouver, will be exposed to the world like never before (with the arrival of the Olympics). We want to use this attention and leverage it for many, many more visitors to come,” Robertson said.

“(We have to) find a balance of new growth opportunities that respect the history, tradition and values that is in this neighbourhood. We want to liven things up here. We have taken steps that will hopefully lead to increased investment, interest and activity for Chinatown.”

Wow that is freaking low…I would have thought that something so vile and racist would never be suggested in Modern Canada…

But let’s be nice and give the VANOC the benefit of the doubt. I think there is some petty office politics in play here.

I think that the apparachniks of the VANOC had a bit of a problem. The people who asked for the CNY parade to be cancelled were probably a large clique of powerful officials who would never listen to reason when their collegues told them that this was a horrible suggestion.

Thus the apparachniks decided to appease this clique by letting them make their request knowing that it will be rejected. Once the rejection set in then the apparachniks can say “hah we told you this was a bad idea” and expose the clique as being stupid and racist.

It had to be done this way or else the clique would come out swinging and say that the Canadian Chinese are being unpatriotic obstuctionist and bad citizens who don’t care about the success and safety of the games or some other self rightous mumbo jumbo.

Thus although we were massively offended, at the end of the day the CC community showed great strength and unity by telling the VANOC to go screw themselves. While the apparachniks scored some big brownie points in the game of office politics.

This is of course at the end of the day pretty messed up and sick but the CC community got the best of it. Now lets go a set off a huge amount of fireworks and firecrackers yeaaaaaaah.
