What is a “banana” you ask?

A banana 香蕉 is a person of Asian descent born (or “assimilated”) in the West (Canada, Australia, Britain) : yellow outside and white inside.
.
Also known as a “Jook Sing” 竹升 . (translated: like bamboo: both ends “plugged”, so little from either culture is thoroughly absorbed).
The opposite of a Banana is an Egg : white outside and yellow inside.

A number of us multi-generational Canadians of Chinese ancestry are getting lost in the sea of hyphenated-Canadian groups.
Many believe that the moniker “Chinese-Canadian”, is a monolithic cultural group.
It isn’t.
Once in awhile, we break out the beer & sushi and watch a good slugfest within this hyphenated community … all in the name for “representation” of this community: Hong Kong Chinese-Canadians, Taiwanese Chinese-Canadians, Mainland PRC Chinese-Canadians, South-east Asian Chinese-Canadians, Malaysian Chinese-Canadians and endlessly hyphenatedly so-on and so-forth.
What is interesting is that you don’t hear much from the invisible minority, the Canadian born Chinese-Canadians. Many of us are descended from the early immigrants who actually contributed to the building of our great nation. We also want to be heard.
We too, would like sing the praises of our forebears’ efforts and contributions.
This blog was initially started by a lonely banana… the UGLY Chinese Canadian. He has often been accused of being a rotten banana due to all his whining and ranting on this blog.
We are now a collective of bananas. A bunch of bananas.
But we’re moving on.
There will still be the odd rant, but we’re going to make an effort to promote things that are banana.

Assimilation is futile… because Bananas will always appear foreign.
